He ran from gunfire in Augusta — then realized he was the victim

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) -- A male in Augusta started running away from gunshots he heard this morning, only to realize he was the victim.

Richmond County Sheriff's Office deputies learned of the incident around 4 a.m. after being dispatched to Augusta University Medical Center, where the victim was taken.

The victim had been walking on First Avenue when he heard gunshots and started running, authorities said. He then realized he had been shot in the leg two times and called for a ride to a hospital.

Investigators said they found cartridge casings on the porch of 2023 Second Avenue, near Olive Road and Gordon Highway, where the victim had attended a party earlier.

Deputies went to the scene to question people early Monday.

The incident occurred hours after another shooting to the south in Waynesboro.

a young male was shot multiple times in the Pecan Grove neighborhood, near Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. The victim was taken to Augusta University Medical Center by Burke County EMA Fire-Rescue. The shooter was described as an African American male with no other verifiable information at this time.
